The Inventory Audit • Specialty 8 of 13
Your inventory pages are the product. Most dealer sites treat them like an afterthought.
We audit VDP completeness, photo counts, pricing transparency, time-to-list, and merchandising signals. The layer Google and shoppers both judge before they ever care about your brand.
Why VDP quality is a conversion lever, not a content task
Two identical vehicles at two stores with different VDP quality convert at different rates. The vehicle is not the variable. The page is.
Photo count, photo quality, description depth, transparent pricing, available video, and time-to-list all measurably affect both Google ranking and shopper-to-lead conversion. Most dealer platforms make all of these optional.
Some stores ship 30+ photos per VDP within 24 hours of receipt. Some ship 4 stock photos and a placeholder description for a week. The shopper notices, the algorithm notices, and the lead rate diverges.
What nobody has told you
"Your inventory team is judged on units listed, not on VDP quality. Volume wins. Quality loses."
"Your photo vendor takes good photos. Whether they reach the website in usable order, with all 30 attached, varies by store and process."
"Stock photos for new units are usually fine. For used units they are a conversion killer that is almost invisible because nobody is benchmarking VDP-to-lead by photo count."
"You may have a great inventory operation. You may have a leaky one. The sample tells the story."
The five failures we find on almost every dealer site
On most dealer sites in this area, you almost certainly have at least three of these.
Photo count below industry standard
Used VDPs with fewer than 20 photos under-perform on both ranking and conversion. The drop-off is steep below 12.
How we fix it: Photo count target by condition (used: 25+, certified: 30+, new: 15+ if real photos), workflow audit.
Stock photos used on used inventory
Used VDPs displaying generic OEM stock photos instead of the actual unit. Shoppers spot it instantly. Conversion drops.
How we fix it: Real-photo enforcement on all used inventory, placeholder rules with 24-hour SLA.
Time-to-list above 48 hours
Receive-to-VDP-live time. Every hour of delay is lost organic and paid traffic against the unit's freshness window.
How we fix it: Receive-to-list SLA, automated workflow from inventory feed to VDP publish, photo-pending placeholder.
Hidden or missing pricing
VDPs with 'call for price' or pricing buried below specifications. Shopper trust drops, Google penalizes the experience, and lead quality on the resulting calls is worse.
How we fix it: Transparent pricing rules, monthly payment estimator near price, financing pre-qual entry point.
Thin or templated descriptions
Three-line auto-generated descriptions on every VDP. Google treats them as duplicate content; shoppers skim past them.
How we fix it: Description templates with vehicle-specific data merge fields, optional human review for high-value units.

What the data says.
Photo count
above 25 on used VDPs correlates with higher ranking and higher conversion in every dataset we have measured.
Stock photos
on used inventory measurably reduce conversion. The variance across dealers is wide.
Time-to-list
below 24 hours captures meaningful incremental traffic on freshness-sensitive used inventory.
The Proof
How a used-heavy independent grew VDP-to-lead 22 percent in 45 days.
An independent used-car dealership in Phoenix was averaging 11 photos per used VDP and using OEM stock photos on roughly a quarter of their inventory. Time-to-list median was 60+ hours.
We rebuilt the photo workflow (target 30 per used unit, real-photo enforcement, 24-hour SLA), added a price-and-payment block above the fold, and tightened Vehicle schema.
VDP-to-lead conversion moved from 1.4 percent to 1.7 percent in 45 days. Average days-to-sale on used dropped 8 percent. Same inventory mix, same ad spend.

Inventory Audit-specific questions dealers ask.
Answered straight.
We use a feed from our inventory provider. Can we change anything?
Yes. Most platforms allow per-store overrides, photo workflow customization, and template adjustments without changing the underlying feed.
Will this conflict with our photo vendor?
Usually not. We audit the workflow from receive to live and identify where the breakdown is. The vendor often welcomes the clarity.
Do we have to show pricing on every unit?
OEM rules sometimes restrict price display on certain units. We respect those rules and recommend transparency only where it is allowed.
Is video worth the cost?
On high-value units, yes. The conversion lift is measurable. For volume units, photo quality matters more than video presence.
How often should we run this?
After any inventory operations change. Otherwise quarterly.
What platforms do you support?
All major dealer platforms. Findings are platform-specific.
Does this overlap with the Conversion Audit?
There is some overlap on the VDP layer. The Conversion Audit focuses on form and CTA; the Inventory Audit focuses on merchandising.
While we are at it
Inventory Audit is rarely the only thing wrong. Three areas dealers usually pair with this one.
The Conversion Audit
VDP form friction, click-to-call gaps, broken trade-in flows. We score the path from ad click to lead and find the leaks.
